About Built for Life Guide

A quiet small workshop with a pegboard of hand tools and a vise on the bench

Built for Life Guide is a small, independent guide to buying things once. We write about how durable goods are made, how they fail, and how to look after them, so you can spend less over a lifetime and own fewer, better things.

Why this site exists

Most product writing is about what to buy this month. Very little of it asks what a thing will be like in fifteen years, or whether anyone will be able to fix it. That's the question we care about.

"Buy it for life" has also become a marketing phrase. Plenty of products carry a lifetime warranty and still fall apart. We'd rather teach you to read the construction than trust the label.

What we cover

  • Materials: full-grain leather, waxed canvas, cast iron, solid wood, wool and steel, and why they last.
  • Construction: stitching, rivets, hardware, joinery and the shortcuts that give cheap goods away.
  • Repair and care: what can be fixed, by whom, and the small habits that add decades.
  • Cost: honest math on when paying more actually saves money, and when it doesn't.

How we work

We don't accept free products, sponsorships or paid placements. When we describe how a material behaves, it's based on how it's made and on widely documented experience, not on lab tests we haven't run. You can read the full rules in our standard.
